Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) is used to treat duodenal ulcer, Benign Gastric ulcer, Zollinger- Ellison syndrome, Gastroesophageal reflux disease and other stomach related problems.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor. Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) is a prodrug. After administration it diffuses in to the parietal cell of the stomach and accumulates in the secretory canaliculi. In the acidic medium Pantoprazole is converted to sulfenamide. This sulfenamide covalently interacts with sulfhydryl (SH) group in the proton pump (H+ K+ATPase) and inhibits the exchange of extracellular K+ for intracellular H+ ion. Pantoprazole irreversibly inhibits proton pumps activity and decreases gastric acid secretion. Pantoprazole is more acid stable and its activity is lowered in higher pH. It is the only proton pump inhibitor which is available as parenteral form.
Absorption: Pantoprazole is well absorbed after oral administration. Its bioavailability is about 77% since it`s undergoes first pass metabolism. Distribution: It is widely distributed in the body in protein bound form. Metabolism: Pantoprazole is extensively metabolized in the liver. Excretion: It is excreted mainly in the urine and small amount in faeces.
How Taken
Use Generic Protonix as directed by your doctor.
Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) is to be taken orally the dose is directed as follows.
- Take Generic Protonix with a full glass of water.
- Do not crush, chew, or break an enteric-coated tablet. Swallow the whole tablet . The enteric-coated pill has a special coating to protect your stomach. Breaking the pill could damage this coating.
- Generic Protonix can be taken with or without food.
- In Adult: Oral: 20-40mg / day before breakfast.
- Duodenal ulcer: 40mg / day to be taken before breakfast for 2 - 4 weeks.
- Benign Gastric ulcer: 40mg / day to be taken before breakfast for 1 - 2months.
- Zollinger- Ellison syndrome: 80 mg / day in 2 divided doses increase the dose to 240 mg/ day if needed.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease: 20 - 40 mg / day to be taken before breakfast for 1 month and continue the treatment for 1 more month if needed.
- Children below 12 years : Not recommended.
- Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Missed Dose
Do not take 2 doses of Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) at once .If you miss a dose of Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole), take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Go back to your regular dosing schedule.
Storage
Store Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) at 15 - 30 degree C in a tightly closed container. Protect from heat, moisture and light. Keep Generic Protonix (Pantoprazole) out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Do not use Generic Protonix if:
